UK University Offer Acceptance

A step-by-step guide to responding to university offers received through UCAS after submitting an undergraduate application. Once all universities have responded, you must choose a firm choice (first preference) and, if applicable, an insurance choice (backup with lower entry requirements) through the UCAS Hub. Reply deadlines for 2026 entry depend on when the last decision was received, ranging from 6 May to 22 July 2026. Failure to reply by the deadline results in all offers being declined by default. After A-level results day in mid-August, conditional offers are either confirmed or cancelled. If conditions are not met, students may enter Clearing to find alternative places. The process typically spans 3 to 5 months from first offer to confirmed place.

Step-by-step guide

1

Review All University Decisions

Log into the UCAS Hub to check the status of each university application. Universities that received your application by the 14 January 2026 deadline must respond by 13 May 2026. Each choice will show one of three outcomes: a conditional offer (place confirmed if you meet specified conditions such as exam grades), an unconditional offer (place confirmed with no further requirements), or an unsuccessful decision. You do not need to respond until you have received decisions from all five choices. If a university has not responded by the deadline, your application to that university is automatically marked as unsuccessful.

2

Choose Your Firm and Insurance Choices

Once you have received all your decisions, select your firm choice (first preference) and, if applicable, an insurance choice (backup). Your firm choice should be the university you most want to attend. Your insurance choice should have lower entry requirements so it serves as a genuine safety net. If you accept an unconditional offer as your firm choice, you do not need an insurance choice. All other offers must be declined. Log into the UCAS Hub and submit your choices. You can make changes within 14 days of replying by calling UCAS on 0371 468 0468. No changes are possible after 24 July 2026.

3

Reply by Your Personal Deadline

Submit your firm and insurance choices through the UCAS Hub before your personal reply deadline. Deadlines for 2026 entry depend on when you received your last decision: if all decisions arrived by 31 March 2026, your reply deadline is 6 May 2026; if by 13 May 2026, your deadline is 3 June 2026; if by 15 July 2026, your deadline is 22 July 2026. Your specific deadline is shown in the UCAS Hub. If you do not reply in time, all your offers will be declined by default and you will need to use UCAS Extra or Clearing.
