Hospital Treatment Access

Understanding and accessing hospital treatment as a new comer in England. Hospital treatment is free for those ordinarily resident in the UK (living lawfully on a properly settled basis). Non-EEA nationals subject to immigration control need indefinite leave to remain status to be ordinarily resident. Those who have paid the immigration health surcharge or meet exemption criteria can also access free hospital care. Exemptions include refugees, asylum seekers, children in local authority care, victims of modern slavery, and others. Non-exempt overseas visitors are charged 150% of NHS treatment costs, with payment required in advance for non-urgent treatment. A&E services are free to all for initial visits, but subsequent inpatient care or follow-up appointments are charged unless exempt.
