eVisa Access and Digital Immigration Status Setup

A step-by-step guide for international students to access and manage their digital immigration status (eVisa) upon receiving their UK Student visa. As of early 2026, the UK has fully transitioned to a digital immigration system -- physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and visa vignettes are no longer issued. All new visa grants are recorded as eVisas, accessible through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account linked to the holder's passport. Students must create their UKVI account, link their passport, verify eVisa details, and learn how to generate share codes to prove their right to study, work part-time, and rent in the UK. Airlines verify immigration status digitally at check-in using the passport linked to the eVisa. The setup process typically takes a few days.

Step-by-step guide

1

Create Your UKVI Account

Once your Student visa has been approved, create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account at GOV.UK. This account is where your eVisa (digital immigration status) is stored and managed. You will need your passport, an email address, and a phone number to set up the account. Account creation is free. Your eVisa contains all the information previously found on a physical BRP card, including your visa type, conditions, and expiry date. As of early 2026, the UK has fully transitioned to digital immigration status and no longer issues physical BRP cards or visa vignettes.

2

Link Your Passport to Your eVisa

Ensure your current passport is linked to your UKVI account. Your eVisa is tied to your passport, and airlines and border officials verify your immigration status digitally against your passport data. If you have renewed your passport since applying for your visa, you must update the passport details in your UKVI account immediately. Travelling on a passport that is not linked to your eVisa may result in denied boarding by airlines or delays at the UK border.

3

Verify Your eVisa Details

Log into your UKVI account and check that all details on your eVisa are correct: full name, date of birth, nationality, visa type (Student), visa conditions (including any work restrictions), and visa start and end dates. If any information is incorrect, report the error through the UKVI account immediately. Do not travel to the UK until any errors have been resolved, as incorrect eVisa details can cause problems at the border and during university enrollment.
